- About the lyrics
Over the years I've been criticized for not including the daughters of God in the lyrics to this song. People have offered various suggestions for overcoming this defect. Among them: replace the word "sons" with the word "saints". If you want to sing this song, and this replacement means you can sing the song confortably, make the replacement with my blessing.
But please be aware that in choosing to sing the song in this way, you're losing a portion of the meaning, and it's a significant portion.
From a genetic standpoint, the only requirement for being a "son" of a particular father is that you share a Y chromosome with that father. It's quite possible to be female and have a Y chromosome–it turns out that only one or two genes on the Y chromosome regulate the development of male sex characteristics. So it is possible for a female to be a "son" in the genetic sense of the word.
Out of loneliness have You called me,
Out of sorrow and struggle and grief
Out of death itself have you called me,
Out of bondage and pain into joy.
For You said
"Seek ye first My kingdom, My sons
And I will give you everything you need.
Seek ye first My kingdom My sons
And I will give you everything YOu need."
When we stand silent in prayerYou give a song to sing,
For our prayers you give the gift of faith
For our faith you show us miracles on Earth
For our faith you bring Your healing touch.
For You said
"Seek ye first My kingdom, My sons
And I will give you everything you need.
Seek ye first My kingdom My sons
And I will give you everything you need."
Out of death You brought a resurrection
On the cross You showed us Your great love
Made us one with Your Body broken
And washed away our sin with Your blood.
And You said
"Seek ye first My kingdom My sons
And I will give you everything you need
Seek ye first My kingdom My sons
And I will give you everything you need."
For we were slaves of sin and now we're sons of God
We were victims of death, now we're alive in Him
We were like sad old men and now we're children again
For in Christ we have a new birth.
For You said
"Seek ye first My kingdom My sons
And I will give you everything you need.
Seek ye first My kingdom My sons
And I will give you everything you need.
You shall have life more abundantly."
